No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money. Matthew 6:24
As I continue to walk with God and grow in obedience to Him, I have come to see and experience the reality of these words: “You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money”. I have learned that there are some instructions God may give that, if financial security is our primary concern, we would never have the capacity to obey.
I don’t believe the text is teaching us to be irresponsible, neglect our needs, or simply leave everything to chance. Rather, I believe this passage is fundamentally about trust.
Practically speaking, it requires us to ask ourselves an honest question: What is driving my decisions—the will of God or the security of financial provision? Can God ask me to go in a direction that appears to offer no financial benefit? If He did, would I have the capacity to obey? Would I trust that the One who gave the instruction would also provide for me, even when I cannot see how?
These are not merely theoretical questions. They reveal where our confidence truly lies. If our sense of security is rooted more in our finances than in God’s faithfulness, we may struggle to obey when His leading takes us beyond what seems logical or financially secure. But when our trust is in Him, we become free to follow wherever He leads, confident that the God who calls us is also the God who provides.
26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Matthew 6:26
God established the principle of seedtime and harvest. Yet the same God points to the birds as an example of His faithful provision. They do not sow, reap, or store away in barns, yet they do not starve because their heavenly Father feeds them.
I believe this teaches us that God is not limited by the laws and principles He has established. He is their Creator and therefore operates above them. While He often provides through the ordinary principle of seedtime and harvest, He is not confined to it.
If God is leading you in a direction where you cannot yet see the provision, seek Him diligently to be certain you are following His will. And if you are confident that He is the One leading you, then trust Him. Do not let the need for financial security become the driving force behind your decisions. Instead, let God’s will lead you, trusting that the One who calls you is faithful to provide.
